Google is neither confirming nor denying, but anecdotal evidence in the blogosphere suggests that a massive penalty has been levied against sites utilizing private blog networks (PBNs) as a way to artificially boost their rankings in Google search.
First reported on renowned SEO blog Search Engine Land late last month, Google apparently sent out widespread manual action notices via Google Webmaster Tools to these sites alleging “thin content” spam.
PBNs are a common “black hat” SEO technique and often give websites an unfair boost in ranking, despite being 100% in contravention of Google’s webmaster guidelines.
Accordingly, all of us here at Big Blue Local are glad that Google has dealt a (hopefully crushing) blow to this practice. Black hat is so 2005!
